Sunnyvale

 

Once called “The Garden of the World” due to its extensive fruit orchards and ample sunshine, Sunnyvale is now a centerpiece of Silicon Valley with key employers including Google, Apple, Intuit, NetApp. In a nod to its defense/aerospace employment roots, Lockheed Martin continues as major local employer. Sunnyvale is bordered to the north by the Moffett Federal Airfield and the San Francisco Bay, to the northeast by San Jose, to the west by Mountain View and Los Altos, to the south by Cupertino, and to the east by Santa Clara. Shopping and dining are made easy with the plethora of stores and restaurants lining its main boulevard, El Camino Real, and the recently redeveloped downtown shopping & restaurant district next to the Heritage District. While Palo Alto has more Eichler homes than any other city in the Bay Area, Sunnyvale is considered to be the home of the Eichler because it is where Joseph Eichler first began building his then-modernistic homes. Today there are about 1,100 Eichler homes in Sunnyvale spread among 16 developments, with the Fairbrae Addition, a 275 Eichler home development completed in 1960, including the Fairbrae Swim & Racquet Club, a community pool & tennis club on Sheraton Drive between Royal Ann Drive and Hollenbeck Avenue. Primary education is provided by the Sunnyvale School District, the Cupertino Union School District, and the Santa Clara Unified School District, while secondary education is provided by the Fremont Union School District and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
